The transformation

Image
I have been teaching since mid 2012. I started off teaching casually and gained longer blocks in the Home Economics Faculty and the Creative and Performing Arts faculty. I have taught every single subject through my casual days. I valued these experiences as it allowed me to be flexible, work with different teachers and bond with students in a short period of time. Some days it was challenging and other days it was quite rewarding.  Fast forward to 2017, I am now a permanent Visual Arts teacher. I am also trained in Technological and Applied Studies area but my heart has always been set to become an art teacher. Late last year, I was asked to prepare a workshop on 'Classroom Management' for Term 1 school development day. While researching through the school holidays, I became interested in everything related to my teaching practice. I started considering how the 'look' of the classroom can influence the way students engage with the classroom content. I looked at teac...

Teacher organisation: Therapeutic

Image
1) Sorting out pencil supplies There is something about sorting things out that makes everything seem therapeutic. I had students begging me today to stay back at recess and lunch just to sort out my pencils. At the same time, I have students who hate repetitive tasks. Usually, students who complete detentions for me are asked to tidy the room and to sharpen pencils. I just have to wave a cup of pencils around and you will see them switching their focus back onto their art making activity. I may have a bit of OCD. I want my pencils in different piles and colour coordinated. The piles include 'dull' and 'sharp' pencils. 2) Having a borrowing system I realised I needed a borrowing system and found the following idea from one of the art teachers on my Instagram account. I was unable to locate an old library box but did manage to find a letter holder from Daiso for $2.80 Aud. I have made individual cards for my Elective and Senior classes. If they ...

Thank you for visiting my blog! I started blogging this year and I tend to share a lot of stories inside and outside of my classroom. I like covering areas such as DIY, classroom organisation, classroom management, Art resources and anything to do with teaching. Sometimes you will see a few posts about my Shih Tzu, my shopping and what I am doing to de-stress. After all, teachers are humans too! I am so thankful that my Friday post about 'Ultimate Teacher Storage Box' has reached more than 4300 views. Here is the link: Ultimate Teacher Storage Box I am glad that teachers are enjoying the post. Australian teachers are my biggest viewers this week but my biggest page view country is from the United States. Crazy how the internet allows you to share. Over in Australia, we are enjoying our long weekend due to the Queen's birthday. I have been binge-watching Season 5 of 'Orange Is the New Black'. I can shamefully say that I have finished all 15 episodes withi...

Inspirations for teaching

Image
I'm always on Facebook and Instagram but for the right reasons. I love looking at what other teachers are doing. They become my source of inspiration. The purpose of my blog is to reflect on my own teaching practice and to share resources. Some ideas of mine are original and others have been borrowed or modified to suit my own classroom. There is so much to learn from one another. I'll use my lesson from today as an example of how I used what I learnt from social media. Year 11 (Senior students) Visual Arts: FIRST INSPIRATION  I joined the 'High School TAB' American Facebook page recently (just yesterday) and even though the system in America is different to Australia, I was still able to get A LOT of ideas! First, I found a blog post about 'Creating a High School Schedule and Culture in My TAB Classroom'. The teacher shared her methods of organising her lesson structures in advance. I was interested in how she experiments with assessment to help push...

Day to day teaching

Image
Instagram has been quite addictive! I have broken the promise of only posting one photo a day. I should have probably known better since I LOVE taking photos. There is just so much that I want to share during my day to day teaching. Sometimes I share about the artworks which my students make, other times I focus on the classroom decorations or classroom systems that I have in place. I also like to share teacher outfits and ideas from my blog posts. so.... Some days you can have a mixture of really good classes and some that can tear you apart. But you keep doing what you do because teaching is more than a job. If you can't teach them today, you can teach them tomorrow. And this pretty much sums up today! It was quite difficult with one class today but hey... we learn from these experiences. Without a challenge, we can never grow to become an even better teacher.

Welcome back to the crazy side

The first day back was SUPER busy... The day started off with three new Year 7 enrolments. I greeted them among trying to photocopy resources for my five-period day and my attempts at moving all the things into my classroom that I have been stealing from home. I provided the new students with their school diary, assessment booklets, uniform information, fee information sheet, mobile phone policy ALL before school even started. I also managed to assign the students into classes. Instead of having period 1, there was a formal Anzac Day service. The History teachers and Student Leaders directed the ceremony. They did a fantastic job even down to the finer details - red handmade poppies on skewers. I was happy to see my students again. They were quite eager to share their holiday stories. I had to use my 'NOISE' strategy to quiet down my first class. It worked tremendously well after flipping through two letters. Link to 'NOISE' ...
