Outside lesson

Image
I need to do more lessons outside. Give students a break from the four walls. It also gives them a nice dose of Vitamin D. Besides teaching Visual Arts to Year 7-11, I also teach one class of computers. It is part of the Technology Mandatory syllabus. I am a trained Visual Arts, Technology Mandatory and Design and Technology teacher. With the computers subject, we are using the program 'Illustrator' to make a game logo, five game items and three game sceneries. I will include some pictures in this post. My school's network has been down for two days. Although most of the computers are now ready to be used, they need to re-download all the programs. I've already spent some lessons with the students drawing out possible ideas for their game design and completed a few theory lessons. Instead of punishing the students with more work, I decided to take them outside. Friday was pretty sunny so we ended up spending half the lesson outside and half inside. I have been clea...

Crazy wallpaper

Image
I'm liking the crazy wallpaper in my classroom. It creates a nice backdrop for photos. It doesn't distract the students as its hidden between two big wooden bookshelves at the very corner of the room. The wallpaper is created by carefully sticking contact paper (for books) onto the wall. Above: Year 7 students are enjoying their 'Selfies' drawing unit. Above: Gave a prize out to a student today. Pokemon is still popular even though the app 'Pokemon Go' has died out. I spent my afternoon recharging by watching asian dramas. I find the best de-stress method is to watch some Cantonese drama, make some DIY project or go shopping.  I did manage to do some work as well. Made some study notes (a few pages long) for my Year 11 Visual Arts students who will be in exam period during Week 9 and 10. Above: A small section from the study notes file. I have been hearing art teachers rave about a new series on Netflix: 'Abstract: The Art...

Class mascot

Image
I added a new class mascot into my classroom. She's going to help keep an eye out for me. My Wicked Witch from Wizard of Oz may have an unhealthy habit of eating naughty children. Above: Pop Vinyl figure. Students have already started asking me where they can purchase one. I started taking 'Snapchat' photos of my Year 7 Visual Arts students. The photos will be used for their portrait drawing unit. Students will be using the grid drawing system to break down a bigger image into manageable parts. By using the Snapchat filters, it makes this unit of work more appealing to them. It also makes the drawing task a bit easier since there are also cartoon aspects to it. I have included some eye stickers over their photos to protect the identity of my students. When I print their pictures out, there will only be the dog filter. Students had a blast taking photos. Above: Photos of students using 'Snapchat' filters. I have also been taking photos fo my stu...
