Embrace the value of Art

Embrace the value of Art There seems to be an increased misunderstanding that 'Art is easy' or 'I am entitled to a higher mark because it is just Art'. Moving up Bloom's Taxonomy: This makes me revisit the taxonomy pyramid created by Benjamin Bloom. His pyramid has influenced many educators. Higher order skills are placed at the top of the pyramid and by looking at his diagram below we can see that 'creating' is placed at the top.  Visual Arts is a subject where it requires students to   create   their own artworks and explain/communicate how they did it. This subject provides activities that help engage students to higher order thinking.  His pyramid is also a great way of scaffolding activities in the art classroom. As an art educator I still cover 'remembering' activities by getting students to identify and match things.  Students are encouraged to analyse artworks by looking at the elements and principles of design, and evaluating wha...

Facebook groups

Image
I love blogging and it has been quite addictive. It is a great way to sit back and reflect on what is working and what needs improvement. Since making this blog (early this year), I have been interested in DIY projects and creating resources that help tackle/prevent issues from arising in my classroom. I have improved with my classroom management skills and resource making skills. Students respect the classroom space as there are structures and routines in place. They can see that I take pride in my classroom space and thus, they also respect the space more. My passion for teaching is getting stronger. It is my fifth year teaching and I feel like there is so much to learn and do! Today, I plan to share a list of Facebook groups that I follow and some of the places where I contribute ideas and resources. Sometimes I link my blog to the post, sometimes I am just happy to show a picture. I love how all the Facebook groups connect teachers around the world. I am based in Australia b...

Last day: Getting organised

Image
The last day of school is usually a breeze. The classes tend to be a bit smaller as not all students make the effort to go to school on the last day of the term. I try to use a bit of class time to organise the room to make it easier for myself when I return to work.  The start to my morning was horrible. I was stuck in a traffic jam that lasted for 1 hr and 10 mins. Usually it takes me 20-30 mins to get to work but today there was a major car accident just before the highway exit. I was a bit worried about getting to work late. The recent rain has made half the car park an unpleasant place to park. I had to drive my car through a pit of wet dirt to get through to the other side. For a minute, my car refused to move and I had to hit my accelerate hard. My demountable is adjacent to the car park so I could see my students as I was struggling to park.  Classes today were quite pleasant. All classes continued on with their practical artworks. While students were working, I wou...
