Change/reflection

Change is inevitable and as teachers we need to be flexible and positive about new ideas and approaches to teaching. Teaching is a challenging job where we need to know our content and find ways to make learning fun. Lately, I have been asking students about how they feel about the subject and what we can do as a faculty to make learning more accessible to them. This has led me back to my blog and I am now sitting here thinking of new ways to deliver content: 1. Make learning more relevant. This year we have been looking at Environmental Issues and Street Art with Stage 5 (Year 9/10). However, compared to previous year, this particular cohort seem to find the projects less engaging. My faculty plans to create four shorter projects for 2020. We need to provide them with topics/issues that are more RELEVANT to them. Make them interested and CURIOUS. Give opportunities for students to generate their own research questions and search for explanations. 2. Make learning clear. Student...

Street Art: Project Based Learning

This morning I asked my students to help me rearrange my classroom furniture into a group layout. I have around 6 groups in my classroom right now. I changed my room layout so that my elective art students can easily collaborate when they partake in their Project Based Learning project. Last year, I invited an artist to come in to talk about the process of mural painting and encouraged students to work collaboratively to create two murals for dance and drama. This year students are working in groups to investigate street art and learn how artworks can serve a purpose in the community. Students must: Submit the completion of the 6 D worksheets. This takes students through the process of defining, discovering, dreaming, designing, delivering and debriefing of the project. Create an i...

Inspirations for teaching

Image
I'm always on Facebook and Instagram but for the right reasons. I love looking at what other teachers are doing. They become my source of inspiration. The purpose of my blog is to reflect on my own teaching practice and to share resources. Some ideas of mine are original and others have been borrowed or modified to suit my own classroom. There is so much to learn from one another. I'll use my lesson from today as an example of how I used what I learnt from social media. Year 11 (Senior students) Visual Arts: FIRST INSPIRATION  I joined the 'High School TAB' American Facebook page recently (just yesterday) and even though the system in America is different to Australia, I was still able to get A LOT of ideas! First, I found a blog post about 'Creating a High School Schedule and Culture in My TAB Classroom'. The teacher shared her methods of organising her lesson structures in advance. I was interested in how she experiments with assessment to help push...
